My name is Uzoma, I am the Movement Communications Specialist supporting the Wikimedia Language and Product Localization team. I am reaching out because you indicated interest in participating in the Translation suggestions: Topic-based & Community-defined lists project.

We now have the Community-defined list feature in the Content translation tool. We want to approach organisers of Wiki campaigns that involve translation happening now or soon to add the collection tags to their article list. So that people who use the Content translation tool can discover these campaigns and participate directly from the moment they access the tool using their mobile device. The campaign suggestions will be in the "All Collection" category of the Translation suggestion feature in the tool, as illustrated in the GIF below.

Our request

Please help us by providing a list of the campaigns happening in your community and the organisers we can approach to add the tag. This is important to us because we need to learn from its usage for campaigns.

I would appreciate your help connecting me to the campaigns you are preparing for in your community.

1. If I understand correctly, the collection would be shown to all users globally, rather than locally?
2. As the event/campaign is normally run for a short period of time, rather than being permanent, can the collection be shown temporarily?
3. As I can see, there are collections called "Essential articles", "Food" etc, can collections also include Wikiprojects?

Yes, the collection will be shown globally (to all who access the translation suggestion feature).

In terms of

can the collection be shown temporarily?

Yes, it can be shown temporarily; you only need to remove the tag once the campaign or event is over.

As for

collections also include Wikiprojects?

Yes, collections also include Wikiprojects article lists and campaigns. If there is a campaign list with the collection tag, it will show under the collection with its own tab.

We are working on deploying it for desktop users now, and it will be ready before the end of this quarter.

@UOzurumba (WMF): Hello, sorry for the late reply and thank you for your helpful answers. I am concerned that most campaigns and Wikiprojects are unique to individual wikis rather than global. Users from other wikis (especially newcomers) may feel confused and annoyed by these irrelevant campaigns and Wikiprojects. It will be great if there is a option to choose whether to display collections globally or locally.

Anyway, I will ask the local community and event organizers and see if they are interested in it. Thanks again. SCP-2000 15:42, 25 February 2025 (UTC)

Get started with the Lua interface to simplify the preparation of modules for translation in MetaWiki

Greetings!

The Language and Product Localization team has developed a Lua interface to simplify the preparation of Lua modules for translation in the MetaWiki platform. This means that module developers can now use the new Lua interface to load translatable strings, and the translators can translate them in the same translation interface that is used for templates and wiki pages.

This improvement makes it easier for translators to find and edit module strings without dealing with raw Lua code. It helps prevent mistakes that could break the module during translation.

We invite you to watch our demo video and read more about translatable modules to understand how it works. Please give us your feedback on this talk page on how well the Lua interface addresses the challenges in your workflow and how useful it is in module localization tasks. You can also refer to Module:User Wikimedia project, which was recently converted to utilize these messages, for example usage.
